![]() People who need 'assistance' like summons to get through Elden Ring, for instance, and use them because they need them, experience the same relative degree of struggle as those who don't need them and don't use them, and so in the eyes of the developers, their victory is equally legitimate. The games also present these options in a non-judgmental way because they frankly don't care how you get to the end, as long as you do. The games don't need easy mode because they've always had easy mode - persistent grinding, build variations, and so on. ![]() The victory is "the point", not the defeat. This is actually Miyazaki's explicitly stated objective in interviews about the series: He wants players to feel genuinely powerful through overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds. Things like the mechanical function of being able to pick back up after death and retrieve your lost souls, or the thematic story elements of steadfastly promoting a message of hope and optimism in spite of decay and despair, exist to facilitate the player's motivation to keep going, because that's what the developers want. This is why, despite using the outward aesthetics of an oppressive and unforgiving world, the mechanics of the games are designed to actually be quite forgiving of mistakes in a way that masocore games aren't. The original FS Souls-type games, on the other hand, are built on the opposite principle: They want you to win. Games in which being hard is the point are kaizo/masocore games like IWBTG: They want you to lose. The difficulty is only there to facilitate the actual purpose of a Soulslike, which is to create a sense of accomplishment in the player through the subjective experience of overcoming struggle. The difficulty isn't the point, and never was. ![]() People who think difficulty is what makes Souls games and Soulslikes great don't understand them on a fundamental design level. ![]() ![]() I wouldn't say steelrising is bad but Lies of P devs definitely understand what makes souls games great better.
